Torah 18 - Slaves to God - Mishpatim

Feb 22, 2025    Pastor Kelly Reed

After the Exodus, the Israelites gave up slavery in Egypt to a master that hated them and took on slavery to a Master who loved them. What's interesting is that some of the first judgments given to these newly freed slaves coming out of Egypt had to do with slavery--and how permanent servitude was done away with, i.e. how and when to free them on a regular basis.

But with that came a judgment of how to make slavery permanent; how a slave can be permanently added to the family. The only reason to do so is because of Love. Because they love their Master and everything he provides for them.

This concept is the basis for how the New Testament talks about slavery and establishes why the most common term for a believer or apostle is that of a Slave or Bond-Servant of Messiah.
